The M25 is one of the busiest motorways in Europe, carrying over 200,000 vehicles per day on some sections. Breaking down on the M25 isn’t like breaking down on a quiet B-road — the risks are higher, the regulations are stricter, and the logistics are more complex. Here’s what every London driver should know about M25 breakdown recovery.
Why the M25 Is Different
The M25 presents unique challenges for recovery operators: no traditional hard shoulder on smart motorway sections with only emergency refuge areas (ERAs) spaced up to 1.5 miles apart, high-speed traffic even when lanes are closed, junction complexity with 33 junctions where the nearest safe recovery access point isn’t always obvious, and Highways England traffic officers who patrol and may arrange recovery if you’re in a dangerous position.
Smart Motorway Sections on the M25
Significant sections of the M25 are now smart motorways, including Junctions 5–7 (Kent/Surrey border), Junctions 10–16 (Surrey to Heathrow), and Junctions 23–27 (Hertfordshire to Essex). On these sections, if you break down in a live lane, the lane should be closed automatically and a red X displayed. If you can, reach an emergency refuge area — these are marked with blue signs and an orange SOS phone.
Motorway Recovery Regulations
Recovery from motorways is regulated differently: operators may need special authorisation to stop on a motorway, high-visibility equipment and beacons are mandatory, on smart motorway sections lane closures may need to be coordinated with the regional control centre, and motorway recovery typically costs 20–40% more due to additional risk and requirements. For detailed pricing, see our breakdown recovery cost guide.
What to Do If You Break Down on the M25
- Get to the left: If on a smart motorway section, try to reach an ERA. If on a section with a hard shoulder, use it.
- Exit the vehicle: Through left-hand doors. Move behind the barrier.
- Call for help: Use the orange SOS phone if available (it pinpoints your location). Or call 020 8088 9680 and give your location as precisely as possible.
- Do not attempt repairs: Changing a tyre on the M25 hard shoulder is extremely dangerous.
